Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, while bicarbonate of Soda also known as Baking Powder is potassium hydrogen carbonate. In addition, they are used in many savory dishes such as soups, sauces, gravies, dips, salad dressings, and marinades. Carbonated beverages such as sodas, beer, and sparkling water are usually made from carbon dioxide gas dissolved in water. Carbonation occurs naturally in water, but it is not stable. It is only stable if the water contains enough dissolved CO2. This is why we add baking soda to our soda bottles. It reacts with the CO2 in the bottle to form a solid compound called carbonates. As soon as the bottle is opened, the carbonates begin to dissolve into the liquid. Once dissolved, the carbonates remain stable until the bottle is closed again. Carbonated drinks are very popular because they give us the refreshing taste of fizzy water. However, they are not good for our teeth. We know that when we drink soda, we get bubbles in our mouth. These bubbles erode tooth enamel over time. Also, the carbonates in soda cause erosion of tooth enamel. This causes cavities and other dental problems.
